Finally something I actually care about… The new change for NCAA football beginning in 2007 is a very interesting one. I‘m glad to see that the NCAA has decided to recognize that we are all apart of Division I in this great big world of sports. This does two things; number one, it shuts up all the ignorant folks out there that thought that Division I-A was superior in every aspect of higher education. Now that I think about it, these people are just plain stupid…for as much garbage that I throw at the Ivy League, they are still considered a part of I-AA football. There’s no doubt in my mind that the Ivy League has some of the greatest philosophers, entrepreneurs, educators and many other great thinkers and doers. The bottom line is that we are all part of the Division I football family. The difference lies within how each subdivision has chosen to determine an annual champion. With the Football Bowl Subdivision there is fogginess about who is actually the champion. There are many opinions and computers that determine who, when and what they play for. It’s also unclear as to what it actually means to have a Bowl Championship Series bowl game that’s not even endorsed in any way by the NCAA. On the other hand the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (formally Division I-AA) has a clear purpose and support of the NCAA. Every year the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) has a 16 team playoff that consists of teams that are selected by a committee of athletic directors from teams belonging to the FCS. This is and will continue to be the best method in which ANY sport can determine a champion. Put them in a bracket and let those teams put it on the field. Kudos to the Board of Directors for making the change and I look forward to the coming years in the Division I - NCAA Football Championship Subdivision. And as for the Division I – Football Bowl Subdivision…you can take that Bowl and put it away in a dark, moist place of your choice. Now, that leads me to the next topic. Rhett Bomar and the Sam Houston State Bearkats. This is the reason for years and years that the I-AA has been considered the red-headed step-child of I-A football. Why should we allow any player, regardless of where they initially signed on to play football, continue to play at another school after being penalized at another. This is a great time for the NCAA to put there foot down and not allow this cheater to be eligible for any sporting activity at any level, Division I, II or III. He has three years of eligibility left and he should be forced to forego one of those years due to his inability to obey the rules. Do I think its fair that student athletes are not allowed to have jobs and provide for themselves, no I don’t. But, the fact is he broke the rules and I hope that he is found ineligible to play this year for the Bearkats. And one more thing…Sam Houston State, you should be ashamed of yourselves for even looking at Rhett Bomar and thinking that this guy would be a great addition to your team. I can understand wanting a great talent, there’s no denying that. You should’ve taken a stand and said, “Not at our school”. This guy knowingly cheated and you have now opened your team up to a so-called leader that has only proven that he can bend and break the rules as he sees fit. Congrats to the Sam Houston Bearkats for letting all of I-AA know who you really are and what you really stand for. On to the Picks... I will now attempt greatness by making my first weeks picks. In case you’ve all forgotten I will select the top 10 games in I-AA each week and make my picks accordingly. You, my faithful readers are fortunate enough to be graced with my vast understanding of I-AA football and the underlying facets to each and every winning pick. Be sure to tune in next week for Homer’s Inaugural Premier Pick’s and as always you can reach me via email, chat room or on the boards.
